A Juneteenth Special from "Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi"

It was a pleasure for us to make appearances in this special program about Gullah culture and foodways.

Taste The Nation with Padma Lakshmi – The Gullah Way • A Hulu Original

Premiered Jun 18, 2020

"ABOUT 'THE GULLAH WAY' The Gullah Geechee people of South Carolina are fighting to preserve the traditions passed down from their ancestors, West Africans forced into slavery. Padma catches and cracks crab with new friends and old, all working towards reclaiming their heritage."

People from Charleston and St. Helena Island were featured in this special presented by Padma Lakshmi that was a tribute to the Gullah people, culture and foodways for Juneteenth 2020. You meet people from our local community, Bill and Sara' Green and go with the crew to neighborhoods, Eddings Point and Mary Jenkins, and our neighborhood near Coffin Point Plantation. Our farm is on a portion of land that once made up the McTureus Plantation off Seaside Road. The property was purchased by Tony's ancestor once enslaved here named Pompey Coaxum in 1868. Descendants of Pompey and his wife Minte still live on portions of the property he bought.

We began a homestead here with our five children and now it is a working and teaching small farm. The regenerative practices we utilize here extend as far back as those used and taught by Dr. George Washington Carver and our Gullah ancestors. It is our goal to continue to hold on to this property with the mission of producing nutricious produce and raise animals in a humane method.
