A Multi-Age Homeschool Environmental Science Course

Backyard Wildlife Stewards

📚 Course Overview

Backyard Wildlife Stewards is a hands-on environmental science and nature study course designed especially for homeschool families with children of multiple ages and learning levels. Rooted in the coastal Lowcountry environment, this course encourages students to explore, observe, and better understand the wildlife and habitats that exist right outside their own door.

Inspired by the philosophy of Project WILD, this course emphasizes wildlife awareness, conservation, observation skills, and environmental stewardship through meaningful outdoor experiences and real-world learning.

Students will learn how animals survive and adapt through the changing seasons, how native plants support local ecosystems, and how even small spaces can become valuable wildlife habitats. Through observation, journaling, outdoor exploration, and habitat-building activities, students will strengthen science, critical thinking, creativity, and data collection skills while developing a deeper connection to the natural world.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Course Structure

This course is intentionally designed for homeschool families with children of multiple ages (approximately ages 5–14 through middle school). Lessons are structured so younger students can actively participate while older students are challenged at a deeper level.

  • Siblings may attend together

  • Parents of younger children or those needing additional support are welcome to stay

  • Older, independent students may participate as drop-off students

🌱 What This Means for Your Family

  • Mixed Ages Welcome (Approx. 5–14): Activities are layered so younger children can explore and participate, while older students take on deeper learning, leadership, and responsibility.

  • Family Learning Environment: Siblings can attend together, reducing the stress of juggling multiple schedules and locations.

  • Flexible Participation:

    • Parents of younger children or those who need extra support are encouraged to stay and assist

    • Older, independent students may be dropped off if they are comfortable and follow instructions.

  • Inclusive of All Learners: These courses are open to children of various learning styles, abilities, and developmental levels. Whether your child is hands-on, curious, quiet, energetic, or needs a bit more time—there is space for them here.

🌼 How Learning Is Structured

Each lesson is designed with tiered engagement, so every child can participate at their level:

  • Younger learners engage through sensory exploration, simple planting, observing, and storytelling

  • Middle learners build skills through guided activities and hands-on projects

  • Older students deepen understanding with journaling, leadership roles, design challenges, and mentoring younger peers

✨ This creates a rich, community-centered learning experience where children grow not only in knowledge—but in confidence, cooperation, and care for others.

💛 A Gentle Note to Parents

       You know your child best.

If your child needs extra support, space, or reassurance, you are always welcome to stay and be part of the experience. Many  families find that this creates a shared rhythm of learning that extends beyond the class and into everyday life.
