Fouche’ Sheppard is the guest speaker for our March Gullah Campfire Supper with Stories and Songs event, celebrating Women’s History Month. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Ms. Sheppard is a native Gullah speaker, Gullah was her primary language growing up, she wasn’t aware of it being different from English until she began attending elementary school.
She learned how to speak English in school and would read what she learned to her grandmother in Gullah. This was where she learned how to go back and forth with both languages.
Through her craft of storytelling, she carries generations of tradition from the Sea Islands of the Low Country. A recipient of the Post and Courier's Golden Pen Award, she is also a distinguished affiliate with the Avery Institute of African-American History and Culture at the College of Charleston and the Poetry Society of South Carolina.
