About the event

Morning Glory Homestead Farm will present a program about the first reading and celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation at Camp Saxton.  The program will feature dramatic interpretations from excerpts of newspapers and journals/diaries of a few important attendees; the Camp Diary of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, January 1, 1863 , Charlotte Forten Grimké, and Susie King Taylor. Hear about the participation of USCT soldiers Sergeant Prince Rivers and Corporal Robert Sutton.

Enjoy a meal similar to the barbecue served at Camp Saxton.  Hear songs performed during the emancipation program and others from the time.

The meal will include beef roasted over fire remeniscient of that prepared for the emancipation program at Camp Saxton.  Additional dishes will be like those of a traditional Gullah New Year's Day meal.  Vegetarian dishes will be included.  Taste gingerbread and rootbear similiar to that made and sold by Harriet Tubman when she lived in Beaufort.  Sit under the live oaks of the farm and hear historians and reinactors alike share about that marvelous event.
