Join us in celebrating the arrival of Charlotte Forten to St. Helena Island to join the teaching staff of the newly formed Penn School. Guests will also celebrate her love of nature, spending time outdoors, and journaling about her experiences while participating in outdoor recreational activities.

About the event
The event is a celebration of the anniversary of Charlotte Forten’s arrival to St. Helena Island as the first Black teacher at the Penn School and her love of nature and spending time outdoors. During this event participants will receive an introduction to Charlotte Forten and her love of nature through her journal entries and be encouraged to spend time in nature, and to explore and participate in outdoor activities with a focus on camping, hiking and kayaking.
For noncamping participants there are hotel and rental accommodations available in the Beaufort area.

Friday
2:00-4:00 pm Check in (2:00-4:00 check in at Penn Center followed by museum tour)
4:30 pm Check in continues at Morning Glory Homestead Farm as guests arrive and set up camp.
