About the event
This farm-based introductory beekeeping class explores the vital role honeybees play in agriculture while emphasizing the nutritional, medicinal, and economic benefits of honey. Participants will learn about the history of beekeeping and how thoughtful hive management supports healthy ecosystems and productive farms.
The course covers choosing appropriate honeybee varieties, understanding hive types, and using essential beekeeping equipment and protective gear. Special attention is given to honey production—how it is harvested, stored, and valued—along with discussion of raw honey’s health benefits and consumer demand. Participants will also be introduced to additional hive byproducts such as beeswax, propolis, and pollen, and how these products can be incorporated into value-added goods.
The class highlights beekeeping as a small-scale agricultural enterprise, discussing startup considerations, seasonal planning, local markets, and opportunities for supplemental farm income.
