About the event
On February 21, 1863, Charlotte Forten recorded a remarkable day: a boat ride from St. Helena Island to Camp Saxton, a visit with Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson and the soldiers of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, and an excursion to a nearby cypress swamp.
More than 160 years later, participants will walk in the path that Charlotte Forten and her friends did in Port Royal.
Rather than simply hearing her story, guests will be invited to observe the landscape as she did—to listen for birds and water, notice moss and trees, examine cypress knees, consider the people who occupied this landscape during the Civil War, and reflect on Charlotte’s extraordinary ability to find beauty and wonder amid a very complicated moment in history.
Certified Interpretive Guides and Master Naturalists, Belinda and Tony Jones will serve as your tour guides and interpreters for this day.
