According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the definition of ‘foodie’ is “a person who loves food and is very interested in different types of food”. It can also mean a person who explores food in different cultures and seeks to eat dishes from restaurants featuring foods from those cultures to collecting recipes and learning prepare those dishes for oneself. In our family, cooking has been a large part of how we spend time together especially during the holidays or special events. Over the years, our children decided that they each had a special dish that they wanted to take ownership of if you will. Each specific holiday he or she would prepare the macaroni and cheese, the sweet potato casserole or the leek and potato soup. Tony and I passed down recipes from our family traditions and introduced new food ways as we traveled from one Army duty station to another. Having been in Germany and Belgium we acquired a taste for their cuisine. While in Belgium working with NATO we were also exposed to people and foods from our allied nations cultures. Now that our children are all adults cooking for themselves it is interesting to see how they have furthered their food knowledge and tastes. Tony and I enjoy tasting their delicious new dishes each time we are together. In this space we will share food ways and they may join in and share as well. If you have a desire to had to the foodie discussion please do.
