You may have heard lots about avocado toast, you may eat lots of avocado toast. Well, this morning I tried avocado toast. Avocados are not new to me, I really like them but I was not introduced to them until I was an adult. I grew up in a Black community, in a town greatly influenced by Black, Southern cooking so we didn’t eat much else. Soul food was our way of life. Gradually, we were introduced to Asian American dishes from the restaurants that moved to town. I did eat some Asian food prepared by an Asian colleague of my mother when she taught at Claflin. I tasted African dishes from my Kenyan neighbors, the husband was a professor at SC State. So that’s a bit about how I was introduced to some international foods.
I don’t recall my first taste of avocado but it may have actually been by having some guacamole from a fast food restaurant. Since then I’ve met many people for whom avocado is a part of their native gastronomy and it’s the best way to not only be introduced to the food but to the culture through the person who prepared it.
Avocado toast is a popular part of the foodie world and some diet plans but it is noted that avocado dishes including the toast have been prominent in most states along the US and Mexican border. “A 1931 column in the Los Angeles Times, for instance, referenced ritzy women enjoying avocado on toast during ‘delightful luncheons the Clark Hotel.” (Mentalfloss.com). Much later, in 2013 it was included in a cookbook by Gwyneth Paltrow entitled It’s All Good. It has been eaten in various ways around the world for what is believed to be more than a century. So when we eat avocado toast it’s not new but maybe reintroduced.
This morning I had my toast using oatmeal bread, olive oil, salt, pepper, onion, and the avocado. I also had boiled eggs and a patty of sausage. That’s it and it was my rico!
So how do you eat avocado toast? Do you have few, many or no toppings? Do you use fresh squeezed lime or lemon? How often to you have avocado toast? Please feel free to share a recipe or some pictures of your favorite version of avocado toast.

😀This is so interesting to me! I became a fan of avocado toast about two years ago. I ordered it at a Bluffton restaurant (First Watch) on wheat bread and loved it! Last year I made some at home for breakfast and served it on sourdough bread (b/c that is my favorite bread). It was pretty good! I was on a retreat in Hilton Head about two weeks ago and ordered it from another restaurant (The Skillet Café and Grill) it was served over tomato on multigrain bread and it was okay. I like how your picture looks with the boiled egg, but I am thinking to try it with a poached egg (going through this thing where I am wanting poached eggs). The bread will either be whole wheat or sourdough. I will let you know. Thanks for sharing! 😋
