Butterfly weed is a member of the native milkweed family. Milk weed in its varieties is the only plant that serves as the host plant for the monarch butterfly. The seeds are formed in a pod with a silky fluff. The flowers of Asclepias tuberosa are the favored by a host of pollinators including hummingbirds, honey bees, native bees, and a diversity of butterflies.
